Spindle Tree
A large deciduous shrub, a native of European hedgerows, from which the wood was traditionally used for making spindles. It has dark green leaves which turn vivid red in autumn, and insignificant summer flowers. Attractive rosy-pink berries follow the blooms, and are often present on the shrub long after the autumn foliage has fallen. The autumn colour is best in full sun but it can grow reasonably well in the shade.Position: full sunSoil: any well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: May and JuneFlower colour: purple-red or red-brownOther features: the flowers are followed by clusters of spherical, pinky-red fruit; all parts of the plant may cause a mild stomach upset if ingestedHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: Tip prune young plants in mid to late spring to encourage bushy growth and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Remove any plain green-leaved shoots as soon as they appear, cutting them back to the origin |
