Red-barked Dogwood
Small, creamy-white flowers in May and June and white-margined, dark green leaves, which turn deep red-purple in autumn and fall to reveal vivid red stems. This variegated, red-barked dogwood is an excellent specimen plant for damp areas of the garden. For maximum impact chose a sunny site where the stems will be back-lit by the winter sun.Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: any moderately fertile soilRate of growth: fast-growingFlowering period: May and JuneFlower colour: creamy-whiteOther features: the flowers are followed by white, often blue-tinged fruit; the fruits may cause a mild stomach ache if ingestedHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: In March cut the stems back hard to within 5-7cm (2-3in) from the ground and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant |
