Pheasant's Tail Grass (syn. Stipa arundinacea)
A beautiful evergreen grass with brownish-green leaves turning shades of rich orange and red. Pheasant's tail grass makes an excellent, all-year accent plant for a sheltered, sunny border. Providing much-needed structure and colour in the winter garden, the faded flowerheads are best removed to prevent it from self-seeding.Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: moderately fertile, medium to light, well-drained soilRate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: June to September Flower colour: purplish-green maturing to pale goldOther features: self-seeds freelyHardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection)Garden care: Remove the faded flower-heads in autumn to prevent the plant from self-seeding. Comb through the plant in early spring to remove dead foliageThis plant is featured in the Tom Stuart Smith Border. Click here to view the ready-made border design |
