Moth Mullein
Tall spires of delicate white flowers with brown eyes rise from a basal rosette of dark green, glossy, crinkled leaves. A delightful mullein that is perfect for a sunny border, cottage-style and gravel gardens. It prefers a poor, well drained soil. On richer soils it may need to be staked. Position: full sun Soil: poor, well-drained, alkaline soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to August Flower colour: white Hardiness: fully hardy Garden care: Mullein moth caterpillars can be a problem - pick off the insects in early June as soon as they appear. Remove faded flowerspikes. Apply a thick 5-7cm mulch around the base of the plant in early springIt is worth keeping in mind that these plants are mainly biennial, so although they usually self-seed freely they will only live for two years |
