Columbine
Bonnet-like flowers in shades of blue, lilac, yellow, pink and rose red from late spring to mid summer above mounds of fern-like, mid-green leaves. These beautiful, often bicoloured columbines are perfect for the middle of a sunny, moisture retentive border. The flowers are larger than other varieties and, although short-lived, the plant self-seeds freely.Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: fertile, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: May to JulyFlower colour: self and bicoloured flowers in shades of rose, red, yellow, lilac and blueOther features: excellent cut flowers; mounds of fern-like, mid-green leavesHardiness: fully hardy Garden care: Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant.
