Bleeding Heart
Arching sprays of dainty, rose pink, heart-shaped spring flowers and fern-like, fresh green leaves. It was first introduced in 1816, then disappeared from cultivation but was reintroduced by plant collector Robert Fortune in 1846. It soon became one of the most popular garden plants and its not hard to see why with its delicate heart-shaped flowers. A perfect plant for an herbaceous border or cottage garden. Easy to grow, as long as its roots are kept moist, it thrives in sun or part shade.Dicentras are northern hemisphere plants, growing from Asia to North America. In their natural habitat they are found in moist soils in the cool margins of woodlands.Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: moist, humus-rich rich, preferably neutral to slightly alkalineRate of growth: averageFlowering period: May to JuneFlower colour: rose pinkOther features: long flower stems make excellent cut flowersHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: Dicentras are happy in any good garden soil that's fertile but not too heavy. It's a good idea to enrich the soil with plenty of leaf mould before planting and apply a mulch in autumn too. A light fertilising in March will help enormously |
